Urban Oasis: A Tranquil Lobby Design by Martin Chow

Creating a Relaxing and Productive Office Environment

The Urban Oasis project focuses on designing accessories for an office lobby in Shanghai, China. During the challenging 2020 period, people realized the significance of greenery and a serene environment. Martin Chow recognized the need for a relaxing and cozy office lobby where individuals could unwind and enjoy their surroundings. By incorporating elements of nature, the Urban Oasis design aims to create a space that promotes creativity and rejuvenation.

The lobby, with its dimensions of approximately 10 meters in width and 35 meters in depth, features a thoughtful arrangement of materials and elements. Leather and fabric are used for the seating, while glass and metal are incorporated into the hanging lamps, creating a harmonious blend of textures. The design team, led by Martin Chow and Alline Wang, meticulously selected these materials to evoke a sense of comfort and sophistication.

One of the key considerations in the Urban Oasis design is the interaction between the space and its users. The main circulation route for daily traffic flow was carefully preserved, while the remaining area was transformed into a tranquil oasis. Stone seating, plush sofas, and a variety of plants were strategically placed to create a calming atmosphere. This allows individuals to take a break, connect with nature, and recharge during their workday.

The Urban Oasis project was completed between January 2019 and May 2019 in Shanghai, China. Throughout the design process, Martin Chow collaborated closely with the client to ensure the lobby's functionality and user-friendliness. Extensive research was conducted to understand the needs of the space and to propose a design that goes beyond a mere transitional area. The result is a lobby that invites people to stay, relax, and enjoy the greenery.

Overcoming the challenge of decorating a large space, the Urban Oasis design was divided into three distinct parts. The front area exudes a casual ambiance, with stone seating arranged in front of the reception counter. The second part serves as a common area, with a large oil painting as the focal point. This arrangement allows individuals to gather around and engage with the space. The final part of the lobby features striking hanging lights, creating a captivating visual element in the lift lobby.

The Urban Oasis design by Martin Chow is a testament to the importance of incorporating nature and relaxation into office environments. By creating a serene and inviting space, employees can find solace and inspiration amidst their busy workdays. The project was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021, recognizing its outstanding creativity and contribution to enhancing the quality of life in the workplace.
